Tom Nelsey heeft op 26 april 2009 meegedaan aan de Marathon van London en daarmee geld ingezameld voor de Drive Against Malaria.
Hier Tom's verhaal:
“About 6 months ago, much to my surprise, I was accepted for the London Marathon on April 26th in a ballot. Not being a runner or ever having any intention of doing a marathon, this was a bit of a shock, but then I remembered applying for it about a year ago. The shock wore off and I have now kicked into a hardcore training regime. I even stopped drinking beer 4 days ago. As per usual I’m very late with the sponsorship request, but I decided to try and raise some money towards Drive Against Malaria. They buy mosquito nets for kids in Africa. I figured at 3 quid a net we can buy a few and make a fair bit of a difference. A huge thank you to everyone that sponsored me for my run, and all your kind words of support, encouragement and general interest. It really meant a lot. My legs are still a bit tired but it was well worth it. I finished in 4 hours 3 mins and although I would have liked to go under 4 hours, I gave it absolutely everything and was happy to just run all the way round without stopping. I was doing a steady 5mins 30 per km for the first 32 KM, but then I began doing each KM nearly a minute slower – I thought the last 10 km would be easy but it really was not and it became a matter of survival instead of going for a world record time. However it was an awesome experience and the crowds make a huge noise as you run through them which is very uplifting. I think the amount raised was over 1,500 euros. I hope that it will raise awareness a little on what a terrible problem this is – especially in Africa. All the best, Tom.”

Thank you Tom for supporting Drive Against Malaria!
